Curcuma longa is a herbaceous plant from the Zingiberacea family, traditionally known as Indian saffron. This spice is widely used in Middle Eastern cuisine and Ayurvedic medicine, and in recent years it has gained a reputation in the west.
The main biologically active component is curcumina, a yellow-orange pigment responsible for the warm, bright colour of this valuable ingredient with remarkable properties: for example, turmeric is an excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
